MODELER'S TIP

SILLY PUTTY MOLDS

"I needed to copy a small part (a side mirror), but I didn't want to make a rubber mold and go through all that hassle. Instead, I placed the part on a clean, flat surface (a piece of glass is a good choice), then I pressed a ball of Silly Putty over the part until the whole piece was covered.

"After removing the Silly Putty from the glass, I placed the Silly Putty (with the part still embedded in it) in the freezer and waited for the putty to harden. Silly Putty is originally greasy, so the part came out of the frozen mold without a problem, leaving a firm and undistorted mold.

"I then poured 5-minute epoxy into the mold, waited until the epoxy hardened, then waited a little longer for the putty to thaw and regain its flexibility. The result was a hard and perfectly formed part that easily came out of the now-flexible mold."
