Registration Open for the 2011 Show

In this issue:

This Year's Date

With under five months to go before our 10th anniversary Classic Car Show & Autojumble and an encouraging looking weather forecast for August, we had better let you know what we have lined up on Sunday 21st August 2011 from 9am to 4.30pm.

Before we do that, a quick round up of 2010's show, another record breaker thanks to your generosity.

A wet and windy Saturday was followed by near perfect conditions on the Sunday, bringing out over 1,300 classic vehicles of all sorts and sizes, various car clubs plus trade and autojumble stands.

We welcomed Mark Evans and Ian Wren back into the commentary box to preside over a full day of arena events, including the first Mark Evans Silver Spanner Award, which went to an unusual Austin Melbourne Tourer.

If you have been to any Lions event, not just one of Cranleigh Lions' events, you will know the day is all about fundraising for needy people in the club's area and beyond.

We're delighted to announce that we smashed the 2009 fund raising record and raised over £20,000. If you contributed in any way, thank you.

Some of money raised has been put to good use at CHASE hospice care for children and Rowleys 50+ Day Centre, which is much valued by the elderly in Cranleigh. The remainder of the money raised is distributed throughout the year and information about how the Lions do this can be found at on our website.

Anyway, back to this year's Classic Car Show.

It's on Sunday 21st August 2011 from 9am to 4.30pm at the Cranleigh Showground and if you enjoyed last year's show we hope you will come along this year, and if you've not been before we hope you can join us.

We've come a long way since our first show, with 100 cars at the Cranleigh Showground raising £600, and we're proud to put on one of the largest one day classic car shows in the south of England.

We want to continue to improve our show and would appreciate your views on what you look for in a perfect classic vehicle day out. If you have access to the Internet and would like to take part you can have your say, anonymously, by going to www.cranleighlions.org/classiccarshowsurvey

If you are the owner of a classic vehicle then your vehicle, the driver and one passenger get in free. All other passengers 16 and over cost £5 and the programme is £3.

Once again we have classic vehicle enthusiasts Mark Evans and Ian Wren running an interesting day of arena events, plus we'll have more varied food available and the band The Logical Tickle will be playing during the day. Brooklands Museum will be back with their popular display and we're hoping to entice them into the arena. There will be the usual selection of trade and autojumble stands - a great source of unusual vehicle parts.

Our Nominated Charities

This year we have four nominated charities all of which offer vital services to the community.

Shooting Star CHASE (formally CHASE hospice care for children) provide nursing, practical and emotional support to families with children who are not expected to reach their 19th birthday across West London, Surrey and Sussex. Shooting Star CHASE are currently helping 500 families with two hospices, Shooting Star House in Hampton and St Christopher's in Guildford and need £23,000 per day to provide these vital services.

Rowleys 50+ Centre is a lifeline community service open 5 days a week throughout the year, providing a comfortable and sociable environment for the residents of Cranleigh and the surrounding villages. In addition to its daily restaurant facilities and its hairdressing, chiropody and wellbeing services, Rowleys also offers a range of weekly activities, including indoor curling and exercise classes, and organises a programme of entertainment, coach outings and an annual holiday, all at prices that are affordable for those managing on limited pensions.

The Prostate Project raises money to support the detection and treatment of prostate cancer in men, the most common cancer to affect men. The Prostate Project are currently raising £2million to build a urology centre adjacent to the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.

Jigsaw School provides specialist education and life skills training for children aged 5 to 19 with autism spectrum disorders and related communication disorders. Jigsaw is the only school of its kind in Surrey and needs funding to support the children currently attending the school and expand the help it provides.
