Photos from Mad City Modelers 2022 contest

On Saturday, March 5, 2022, modelers from around the upper Midwest gathered at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin, for the Mad City Modelers annual contest. The show doubled as the IPMS Region 5 Convention. Not surprisingly, with 541 models presented, attendees had no shortage of fantastic scale models to view. From airplanes to cars, ships to tanks, science fiction and fantasy, this show had it all. Enjoy!

Dry-brushing tutorial video

Dry-brushing is an essential technique for scale model builders that allows you to quickly and easily highlight surface details. While there has always been a certain amount of mystique around dry-brushing, really, nothing could be simpler.

Apply chipping medium with a paint brush

There are many ways to achieve chipped-paint finishes on your scale models, be they an AFV, ship, car, or sci-fi vehicle. And chipped paint screams used like few other things. For heavily weathered subjects, there’s nothing as convincing as actual chipped paint achieved with a chipping medium. For focused areas or small parts, you don’t even need to load up your airbrush.

Exclusive reviews for subscribers

Do not miss any of the exclusive Workbench Reviews available only to FineScale Modeler subscribers online.

Access includes this review of the Revell 1/48 scale SR-71 Blackbird. A superb kit overall of the sexiest of spy planes, but watch out for silvering on the decals.

And make sure you don’t miss these reviews while you’re there:
