Or if you manage to start a hole that doesn't drift, it's so off-center that the entire effect is lost? Here's how to drill a perfect hole into the end of a rod. Put a piece of tubing over the exhaust pipe. Slide a second piece inside the first, then insert your drill bit into that one.
