Taking (or Making) a Stand
Taking (or Making) a Stand

Here's a great idea that jumped right out of the mailbag when we were discussing "easy" tips in the workshop.

Holding model‑car parts while you're painting is always a juggling act. Commercial "third hands" work great, and simply bending a piece of wire and taping it to the inside of the body works okay, but with a little ingenuity and a few cents' worth of lumber, you can make a quick, easy, secure paint stand that can be used in many applications.

Milton Burns of Broadview Heights, Ohio, did just that, and we thought it was a pretty nifty idea. Here's what Milton had to say:

"I wanted a simple, low‑cost paint fixture that allowed me to move and rotate models as I painted them — primarily to minimize paint runs. Commercial units with extra features are available, but were more than I needed.

"My solution was to simply use a piece of 2x3 lumber (2x4 would work just as well) with bent wire attached to each end. You can make the piece of wood as long as you need — just make sure the ends fit inside the car body. The vertical 'handle' is a piece of 1x2 lumber with a hole drilled into the bottom, which allows you to place the unit on a peg while the model dries.

"The wire is simple coat‑hanger wire. Cutting the wire with snips actually left the ends somewhat pointed, which helped in grabbing the model and holding it securely in place. The bent‑wire pieces are attached to the ends of the board with cable staples. The key is the small U‑bends in the middle of the wire, which keep the wire from rotating.

"The cost factor was zero, and it took less than 30 minutes to build."
