One additional way to make realistic asphalt pavement is to use real asphalt.
Home centers such as Home Depot carry a line of patch called "Latex‑ite Trowel Patch" used for filling small cracks in asphalt driveways. This pre‑mixed cold patch can be troweled onto just about any surface.
Because it's real asphalt, the color is right; and when it's dry (which takes a while) it can be sanded to a more‑scale texture if desired.
Mask the edges of the road or other paved surface, and pull the tape off when the patch is dry to create a nice, sharp edge.
